Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour 280 g, spooned and leveled
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter 2 sticks, 226 g, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar 150 g
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar 165 g
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 340 g
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans optional

Method

  1. Preheat. Heat the oven to 190 °C (375 °F) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients. Whisk the flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cream. Beat the butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla until creamy, about 2 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs. Beat them in one at a time.
  5. Combine. Gradually beat in the flour mixture just until combined. Stir in the chocolate chips and the nuts, if using.
  6. Bake. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough 5 cm apart. Bake 9–11 minutes, until golden brown at the edges. Cool 2 minutes on the sheet, then move to a rack.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Dough balls freeze for 3 months; bake from frozen and add 1–2 minutes. Calories are per cookie, without nuts.
